Fresh Ingredients for Your Healthy Frozen Fruit Smoothie

August 24, 2016

Smoothies are a great way to increase your daily intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. But depending on the ingredients they’re made with, smoothies can quickly turn into unhealthy calorie-bombs filled with sugar, additives, and saturated fat. And consuming too many high-calorie smoothies could counteract their health benefits and sabotage your efforts to stay – or get – healthy.

What can you hope to find in the healthiest smoothies? First of all, keep in mind that organic ingredients are always in your best interest. We know, however, that this isn’t always possible, so don’t beat yourself up over it. Do the best you can.

Healthy Smoothie Bases
When it comes to smoothie ingredients, there’s nothing better than raw, fresh juice – whether from a juicer or squeezed. If you’re not lactose intolerant, raw milk is a great option also. Almond and coconut milk (and coconut water) work too. Soy milk is often used in smoothies, but because there’s evidence that soy isn’t the health food it’s been marketed as, do some careful research to find out if it's for you.

Water is found in many smoothies, but make sure it's pure water. "Pure" includes water run through a good filter, legitimate bottled water (Spring Mountain, Starfire), distilled, purified, and the best option:  spring water. To locate natural spring water near you, check out Find a Spring.

Using a healthy or medicinal tea can really improve the nutrition of your smoothie as well. The term “elixir” is sometimes used to designate these ingredients. Healthy fermented beverages can add nutrition to a smoothie also. Kefir, kombucha, and Hindu lemonade are some examples of beneficial fermented liquids.

Healthy Smoothie Ingredients
Look for smoothie ingredients that are natural, raw, unprocessed, and fresh – ingredients that are truly good for your health. And don't be afraid to try a new ingredient you've never used before if you are making your own fresh – or frozen – smoothies at home.
