3 Reasons to Eat More Strawberries

Aug 10, 2016

Nothing beats a bowl of sweet strawberries, and their versatility makes them a delicious treat to consume year-round. Strawberries have a sweet flavor and a juicy texture; they're good consumed on their own, tasty when added to hot and cold dishes, and excel when in a frozen fruit smoothie. They also boost your intake of several essential nutrients and offer a number of health benefits. At Froozer®, we understand the importance of eating whole foods for superior nutrition. We are also committed to providing you with natural fruits – including strawberries – and veggies in all their glory, nothing added or subtracted – not even a drop of water. The health benefits of strawberries are many and varied. Here are just a few good things to remember about them.

Fiber
Despite its importance, many Americans fail to consume the 20 to 30 grams of fiber recommended daily for women and men, respectively, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Fiber adds bulk to your stool so that you feel full after a meal. Bulk also helps your body move stools through your digestive tract efficiently to prevent constipation. One cup of sliced strawberries contains 3.3 grams of fiber, 17 percent of the daily-recommended intake for women and 11 percent of the daily-recommended intake for men.

Vitamin C
Each 1-cup serving of sliced strawberries contains 97.6 milligrams of vitamin C, just over the 75- or 90-milligram daily-recommended intake of for women and men, respectively, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, a protein that supports the structure of your blood vessels, skin, bones and other connective tissues. Consuming a diet high in vitamin C correlates with a decreased risk of heart disease, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, as Vitamin C is an antioxidant.

Folate
Folate (vitamin B-9) helps your body produce new red blood cells, the oxygen-carrying cells in your bloodstream. It aids in cell growth by facilitating DNA synthesis, an essential step in cell division. It also helps you produce amino acids, the small molecules your cells require to make protein. Each 1-cup serving of sliced strawberries contains 40 micrograms of folate, or 10 percent of your daily-recommended intake, reports the Linus Pauling Institute.

Some Berry Good Ideas
Try blending the berries with iced green tea and basil for a refreshing smoothie, or add some berry slices and crushed mint leaves to your ice water. Better yet, try our Strawbanana Bliss frozen fruit smoothie. It's a good source of strawberries, and therefore vitamin C, providing 15% of the recommended daily amount in each low calorie serving.
